WA mining: Iron ore shipments from Port Hedland to China increase

IRON ore shipments to China from Port Hedland rose 5.3 per cent in September from a month earlier.

Port data released on Wednesday showed shipments to China from the world's biggest iron ore port totalled 37.4 million tonnes in September, up from August's 35.5 million tonnes, according to the Pilbara Ports Authority.

AUSTRALIA’S chief resource economist says WA could earn “hundreds of billions of dollars” by taking advantage of its battery-making mineral wealth but has warned governments must act quickly to capitalise on the opportunity.

The latest quarterly report from Department of Industry chief economist Mark Cully tips exports from the Australian resources sector to top a quarter of a trillion dollars this financial year, at $252 billion. 

Traditional exports of iron ore, coal and liquefied natural gas — expected to increase 55 per cent to $48 billion this year — will remain Australia’s dominant commodities.

Jobs in WA mining climb to record high

WA’s emergence as a global lithium powerhouse has helped drive the number of people employed directly in mining across the State to a record high. 

Latest statistics from the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety for the 2017-18 financial year showed more than 112,000 people were directly employed in the sector.

The figures also revealed the mineral and petroleum industry reported sales of $114.9 billion, up $10 billion from the previous year.
